February 11, 2021

Pura Crespo Carames, 97, of Manhattan, New York, passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 11, 2021, at her home in the Lower East Side.

Pura was born on February 22, 1923, in Galicia, A Coruna, Spain, in the town of Bergondo. Following her marriage to Jose Antonio Carames in the early 1950s, she immigrated to New York City and became a naturalized citizen to join her husband, who had previously immigrated to NYC from the same area in Spain. Upon immigration, she and her husband became part of a group of immigrants from Spain that settled in South Brooklyn and Manhattan's West 14th Street area in the early and middle part of the 20th century. They lived in a vibrant and culture-rich South Brooklyn community from the 1950s to the early 1970s, moving to the Lower East Side in the 1970s, where she lived until her passing. She was a true New Yorker of immigrant roots, with strong values and a sense of family. Loved by many, she was known for her caring, giving, and family loving nature.

Pura was predeceased by her husband Jose Antonio Carames, her two sisters, and three brothers. She is survived by her only son J. Anthony Carames, his wife Donna, and her two grandchildren, Anthony Peter and Jacqueline, who she loved very much. She is also survived by numerous members of her husband's family and their children, who also loved and cherished her dearly

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A service will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on the Lower East Side. Church services are on Tuesday, February 16th at 10 AM. Interment will immediately follow church services, at St John's Cemetery in Middle Village Queens.

Pura was one of the kindest, sweetest, nicest woman I believe I have ever known. I always loved listening to her and my grandmother speaking in Spanish. God bless her she lived a long life loved by all her family. Heaven has gained an angel. She always brought a smile to my face whenever I thought of her. I really enjoyed my last couple of visits with her in her New York apartment it was always such a pleasure to see her and speak with her. Thank you for the kindness, smile and love you brought to all.
