Obituary of Anthony (Sonny) Ruggiero
November 10, 2022
New York City, NY – Anthony (Sonny) Ruggiero, 91 passed from this world on November 10, 2022 at JFK University Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. He was born on September 24, 1931 in New York City, as the son of Frank and Anna Ruggiero.
Anthony graduated from P.S. 11 high school, class of 1949. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army in Great Britain from December 1951 – October 1953, during peacetime. He was always proud of his service and quite fond of his memories playing baseball on the army team during his active duty.
Following his return from service, he met Concetta Fallucci from the lower east side of Manhattan, fell in love and were married in St. Patrick’s (old) Cathedral, 203 Mulberry Street, Manhattan on June 16, 1956.
They had two children – Dominick and Dorianne.
They celebrated 38 years of marriage until the death of his beloved wife on May 22, 1994. In addition to his wife, he was pre-deceased by his daughter, Dorianne St. George in November of 2021.
Anthony was a member of the Knights of Columbus, various Senior Center singing groups and the church choir. He was also a die-hard Yankees and Rangers fan. He loved all types of sports and enjoyed being on many local bowling leagues. Anthony was called “sonny” mainly because of his parent’s neighborhood nickname, “Frankie and Anna Young.” His father was always amongst the youth of the neighborhood and enjoyed their youthful energy, matched only by his own. The nickname applied to Frank’s wife and his oldest son.
A devoted husband, father, brother and son to his family, he tried always to be a support for everyone in the true “Italian” sense of family responsibility. He has been and will continue to be loved and remembered for that.
Anthony is survived by his son, Dominick Ruggiero; son-in-law, Joseph St. George; sister, Maryann DePalma and several nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held from 4-8pm on Monday, November 14, 2022 at Flynn and Son Funeral Home in Metuchen, NJ. Burial Mass and Service will be held on Tuesday November 15 at 10:15am at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Metuchen, NJ. He will be laid to rest at Woodbridge Memorial Cemetery with his deceased wife.
Those who wish to remember Anthony, may make a gift in his memory to the American Cancer Society or a non-profit “Hospice” of your choice. Arrangements by Greenwich Village Funeral Home, 199 Bleecker Street, NYC, N.Y. 10012.
